Phinney Ridge
A small urban lot where screening between close neighbors offered steep design challenges. We were asked to take away the lawn and try not to design in a square format...a challenge when the space is the shape of a postage stamp. Diagonal and free form lines helped get us out of the box. Paving is Wilkeson sand stone in warm hues. West facing fence will eventually host vines and roses. Existing Katsura and Albizzia trees provided structure to work from.
North Capital Hill
Often the big priority for the city homeowner is to maximize the limited space that they have.
Side yards are usually overlooked because they are so narrow... and seem useless junk repositories. They can be difficult spaces to configure... but I like the challenge of transforming a long narrow side yard.
In this garden, the side yard is a mere 7’ wide! We replaced the solid wood gate with wrought iron, allowing more light and a feeling of transparency as you make the narrow transition from front to back. The gently meandering path changes materials along the way to vary the experience underfoot. The plantings punctuate the path ... a pattern of heights and visual textures. A small fountain is strategically placed offering views from inside.
Small Fauntleroy Garden
Clients often complain... "But my yard is so small... there is no space to do anything"
I find small spaces fun as well as challenging. It’s similar to creating a movie set. It takes a very organized design to pull it off... one that maximizes everything that’s available... even borrowed views. This garden has it all ...on a tiny scale.
