West Seattle
When a major mud slide covered the entire backside of their new house, the clients had a 12' tall concrete retaining wall installed...then called in desperation with a 10' wide mud garden. My first site visit was in hip boots. We worked along with the client on this one and transformed the space dramatically. What had been cold stark concrete and mud evolved to become a cozy series of rooms with deck, paving and lawn. Wall embellishment was the major objective here since they were staring out at it from every room in the house.
Northwest Flower and Garden Show
For many years I had participated as a volunteer in various ways for the Washington Park Arboretum. Then in a 1993 collaboration with landscape designer Lisa Hummel, we created their award winning exhibit 'A Garden in Winter'. Breaking tradition for the Flower and Garden Show, we used the natural palette that is available to us here in the Pacific northwest, and did not force any plants into flower. The Arboretum was quite pleased to win awards for the first time.
In 1995, Lisa and I collaborated again when we designed 'A New Perspective' an exhibit garden for the King County Commission for Marketing Recycled Materials. The challenge...to use exclusively recycled materials. It was an educational experience ...as I learned many more ways to incorporate recycled materials into my projects and followed through in my personal commitment to be a responsible earth steward.
We had a opportunity to work together again when we designed the Signature bed at the Washington Park Arboretum Graham Visitors Center in 1996. The theme garden was called 'Cultivating the Straight and Narrow' and was a demonstration of what can be done to make interesting gardens in long narrow spaces. This installation lasted one year, so the plantings were designed to evolve through the seasons. Since this is a highly visible display garden, the plantings needed to be very appealing at all times of the year. We were assisted in the installation and maintenance of this garden by long standing Mercer Island Arboretum Unit #96.
